My Acer with a desktop-class Athlon64 3000+ always has the fan running, but softly. My ThinkPad with a P3 900 rarely runs the fan but is quiet when it does.

The Acer used to run hard but I cleaned it out (it was BAD, dust was all over) and it's back to running happy. It also seems to have stopped clocking down when idle but I think that's a software issue. The ThinkPad is good about running cool and clocks down when on batteries or idle. Heat only becomes an issue when I do heavy work on it.
