I've had a similar problem in the last few versions of Firefox. It doesn't crash, but sometimes downloads start and don't go beyond 0%. Clearing the cache or restarting Firefox fixes it in my case, yours might be something different though.
Try the
FlashGot extension. It's much more reliable and allows you to pause and resume downloads, as well as download from multiple mirror sites simultaneously for extra speed.
