Random actions trigger CPU usage spikes

Hey all,

I've been dealing with this problem for a while, and since I've been utterly unable to figure out what's causing it, i figured i'd try one of the forums.

Anyways, my problem is that certain activities cause a program that shouldn't be using CPU activities to spike to 90-99% of cpu activity, 'freezing' the computer until the offending program is shut down.

Some examples of when this happens...
Opening word documents - GIANTantispywareupdater.exe goes to 99% (this is part of MS's antispyware beta program, i believe). Computer gets frozen until you end that process, then the document opens properly.

AIM - anytime this is open, it consumes 70+% of CPU time. Attempting to save a transfered file causes it (AIM.exe) to freeze/spike to 99%. GAIM hasn't had this problem.

Basically anytime a file is attempted to be saved from an open program (pictures in firefox or movies in media player), the program will freeze. Note, i can download a file directly to my harddrive, in which case it works normally, but if i open it first in media player, then try to do it...it freezes.

I also noticed that it took 20 seconds or so to change the color of my background, during which time GAIM spiked to 99% and refused to work until restarted.

I run MS antivirus/spyware beta, symantec AV, spybot, and ad-aware. No scan by any of these reveals a problem.

If you need any more details, let me know.

Thanks
