People will ultimately do whatever will benefit them personally, rather than what is best for the population in total.
In the younger generations I think it's getting to be more than that.. My sister is in her mid 20's. If you catch her in a logical impossibility, she will still deny it. It's the most infuriating thing I've ever had to deal with. It's more important to be 'right' than to learn and grow.
Practice admitting when you're wrong, I've found it to be rewarding in personal relationships. And I believe it also gives you more credability.
