Hi,
I have given you my best advice on mixing ram for optimal performance of your computer. My advice (I reread it), may have given you the impression that it would never work and that is simply not the case in all instances. That is certainly not the case. The advice I gave you is the best for no hastle operation.
It might work if you:
1) You make sure the latency is the same.
2) The speed is the same.
3) The chip is on your QVL list for your motherboard.
4) The brand name is the same (in most cases)
Some times it works, some times it does not. I would suggest you give it a try and see if it works, because some get lucky and it does work for them. If you put it in (won't hurt to try) and it works, then go for it.
I think the main thing about the third slot is that some have the exact same chips like 3 - 512 chips and that way they can have more than one gig of ram.
So, give it a try and see what happens and let me know if you were successful. Good Luck..
