For quick info on network connectivity I use AlertPing. A good tool that I put on machines I set up for folks, so if I get a call, 2 mouse clicks and I know what is and what is not working.

I configure local host, all network devices, first hop to the ISP, hops inside the ISP, DNS servers, first hop outside the ISP and a few known sites on the web that I typically expect to have good up time and access.
