Has anyone had a problem where you can hear sound from the computer through headphones, then you remove the headphones and no sound comes from the speakers?

It's a friend's Japanses laptop... I've checked through the volume controls, and nothing is muted and they're all at a level that can be heard. She did say something about it starting when she plugged a microphone into the computer. I tried to check whether something's lodged in the headphone jack (therefore cutting off the speakers), by plugging in my own headset... but headphones go in with no problems.

I didn't think this could be a virus, but I can't think of any other possibilities as the speakers probably couldn't produce enough noise to blow out. Any ideas?
