Well, to me it looked as though it was to restore trust in the Western world. We proudly went off to wage war on those who hate us, and to restore our pride. What we got was a load of dead soldiers, and a (falsely) restored sense of comfort.
Unfortunately, not everything can be solved with a bigger stick.
