i agree with dai on this, it probably hasn't died, but you are possibly seeing errors because of overheating.
this fan is CRUCIAL on some machines, depending on the rest of the configuration and how you use the machine.
and with it getting worse like that, and then getting terrible after a few mins, that sounds kind of like it would be consistent with the bridge heating up.
although i'm not sure that this fan is causing the problem, when working on something, it's a good idea to fix the things that are obviously wrong with it first.
you might also try running speedfan on it, it might be able to see this chip's temp.
and you can set speedfan up to make a log, so you can go back after you are done testing and see what the temp was doing, and compare it to what the screen looked like.
