Much of the clicking & grinding noises stem from the laser trying to find where to read on the disk & roving back & forth on the arm.
This may or may not be the answer to your problem. And I've been told that Sony will still fix the box after it's been opened as long as you tell them that you are getting DRE's (Disk Read Errors)
