also try the chkdsk /r option. what you need to do is to bootup with your friend's windows xp cd. oh yeah, you will need to go into the bios and set the first boot device to cdrom. save settings and exit the bios.

put the windows xp cd in the cdrom and the computer should boot off of the windows xp cd. then on the main console choose repair. the computer will ask your for an admin password and just simply hit enter if you dont have one.

then on C: type in "chkdsk /r" without the "". this should take a bit of time and after this is finish, restart the computer and boot into windows reguraly and see if the problem goes away.

also if you can, check the eventlog and see if there are any error post there. you can go to the eventlog by right clicking on my computer -> click on manage -> and then click on the eventviewer. if there are errors post it here and ill see what i can do to help you out.
