I'm not sure how USB and CAT-5 cables got mixed up in your post, but they don't go together! :)

I'd be willing to bet that you'd get at least $25 worth of ulcers trying to get the USB lash-up to work properly. OTOH, you can buy 10/100 NICs for $10-12/ea, and a simple cross-over cable gets you out of the gate. You will have a much easier time getting Ethernet running, since that's were 99.9% of the networking effort is concentrated.
