Reversing Hard Drives

I got a new hard drive about a year ago because my old one was small and almost full. I was using the old one as a backup and the newer one as the main one. Last week, I couldn't get on the internet or do a system restore. I decided to disconect the newer drive and use the old one, though it isn't set as the primary drive. Now I'm able to do system restore and get on the net. Is there a way I can still use the newer one to save things without reformatting it? I got important things on it and I don't want to lose any of it.
