Greyknight17 thanks for all your help,in the end i decided to do a backup of my files and do a fresh install as i must admit my comp was full of a load of rubbish seeing i installed xp two years ago.
Sorry if i have wasted your time, your advice will come in handy if the same happens again in the future.
