Not sure what you mean by boot the Ubuntu CD to it, I assume you mean you want to install Ubuntu to another partition? Make sure your cd rom is set higher than your HD in the boot order, then it should boot the Ubuntu disk. How did you burn the ISO to the cd? You can't just burn the iso, the ISO is an image. When the CD boots, you should have an option to install Ubuntu. Don't format the partition however, the install process will take care of that.
