So I gave up trying to fix this problem myself since I already screwed up my laptop's hard drive while trying to fix my external hard drive. I called a few data recovery places and got really wide quotes ($200-$3000). I found a place that has a local office near my house and I used them. I was able to get my recovery done for $700 for both drives and, according to the list they sent me, I think I got about everything back. They shipped me the drives today so I should get them by the end of the week. I'll let you know how it goes, but so far, things with this company have been excellent.

Moral of the story: Backup often, don't just unplug your external HD (which I tend to do) and don't fiddle around with partitions, etc. if you don't really know what you're doing.
