Any way to bypass power-on switch in HP laptop?

Hello all,

I am doing what I can to help my friend with his HP pavilion DV6110us. My experience is primarily with desktop PCs.

Apparently, the power-on switch is broken. When it is pressed, the power light goes on, but the system does not boot.

This model has a feature called "quick play" which is for the purpose of playing DVDs and other media instantly without waiting to boot the GUI. The feature is accessed through a place right above the keyboard which is called the "media button"; you simply touch it, and an app called quick play starts which gives you the options of playing a DVD, music, looking at videos/photos, and of starting windows. Each of these options is accessed through an icon.

If the windows icon did what it was supposed to do, he could start the laptop that way, without needing to use the power button. However, clicking the icon results in the pc starting to boot & then going to hibernation. Once in a while it will actually work; so last night when this happened, I re-installed the drivers for the quick play buttons and disabled hibernation. I was sure that would work, but nothing changed.

I got on a chat with HP techs, but the best they could suggest was a hard reset, also fruitless.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
