I pull the spark plugs out, get an brand new "regular" pencil (not a carpenter's type, etc) and stick it where the spark plug goes. [Brand new = not sharpened. If I happen to have a dowel of the same size, that is the #1 choice] Then I slowly turn the engine over, maintaining a little pressure on the pencil. If you watch the pencil, you will see it moving in and out as it is pushed by the piston. You can find TDC exactly using this.

Now, you don't want to put too much pressure on anything - it would be bad to break part of the pencil off in the cylinder...
