SATA compatibility issues..

Hey everyone, quick question that I need to verify. I have a 2.5 laptop SATA HDD that's not working and reading in anything, and I think it's dead. My question is, should you ever, need and drivers or firmware, when you are hooking up a basic IDE or SATA HDD, with a USB converter to a another desktop machine? I plug it in, and get nothing, and on a diagnostic tool I have, it has question marks and acts like nothing is there, 0.00K. Thanks.
