Firefox, Itunes, Quicktime and downloads

I have all the above installed on windows vista. Until I got an ipod and had to install itunes and quicktime everything was fine.
I often download mp4 podcasts from a site. Before itunes, quicktime and the ipod I had the option to save the file to a location on my computer for future viewing which I did. Now that I have quicktime, which is required for itunes and the ipod, I don't get the option to save the mp4 file. It automatically downloads to quicktime and opens the file. I cannot save the file for future viewing. Of course I could "pay" for the "pro" version of quicktime and save the file but I don't want to do this.
I tried uninstalling quicktime but itunes won't work without quicktime.
Is there a work around to save the mp4 files like before quicktime?
Thanks for any help.
