Mistake Login failed error

I have a Dell computer that runs on Windows 98 and is maybe 5 or more yrs old. Since adding my daughters Mac laptop to out Verizon DSL service, it did run ok. Verizon did over the phone change some type of configuration to allow her computer to run on our older DSL modem. When they finished, all computers in house were running normal and connection to internet fine. I'm afraid now since system restore...Ive messed up configuration they set in order for daughters Mac to run on DSL service.
Now I try to login on older desktop and I can pull up the Verizon login page and type password in, but get a small box that says " Verizon-login failed"
We havent' changed passwords....I tried system restore and picked a point when I knew we had no login issues.....didn't work. Before I spend over an hour with Verizon tech on phone....is there something I can try. I did run Msconfigure...and they're are so many checked items for startup and I see 98 procceses running. Help!!
What are the absolute 5 or 6 processes that you need so I can relieve that as well as what to do for "login failed". By the way...the error "login fail" looks like a Windows box with error in it and not from Verizon.
Thank you,
