Network error

Can someone help me? I'm using AVG 8.5 and have been for a long time. My OS is XP. Recently, when I try to view certain web pages, I get this error:

"Network Error (dns_unresolved-hostname), Your requested host prosecure.microsoft.com could not be resolved by DNS. For assistance, contact your network support team"

I've contacted my internet provider and went over everything with them. Everything is as it should and it only happens for some web pages. They seem to think AVG is detecting possible viruses/threats and is keeping the sites from loading. I think this is correct but can't figure out how to stop this if it's true. I emptied my virus vault and the first time I tried to go to a webpage, it worked. The second time I tried I got the error again. Also, I don't know if it's related but today I noticed and AVG toolbar at the top of my screen and I know I didn't request that.

If anyone could give me some ideas I would appreciate it.
