It really depends on what is running in the background. With xp and a fresh install, 512 is fine. As you install more software though, you will have more processes running in the background. This is what really eats up your memory.
If you go to Start > Run and type msconfig > Enter, then click startup tab it will list processes that run when windows starts. Some of these you need some you don't.
You might try disabling one's that look unnecessary and see if this speeds things up and gets rid of the virtual memory errors.
