Red Faced reformated computer with Win XP Pro but no sound

Greetings and god bless whoever is reading this and can help!

Our computers at work recently contracted a Trojan Virus. Our last resort was to reformat all the computers. All is working except for the audio - there is none.

When trying to play windows media player material, for example, the following error message appears: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly." (Error code: 0x00D11BA in "more help" section).

Under the Device Manager, we have SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio which displays itself as working properly.

After surfing these tech forums for help, I took the advice to download drivers and software directly from the manufacturer's website. I tried downloading drivers from Dell (which didn't seem to work), so proceeded to Microsoft (which didn't help) and finally onto Intel (same result or lack there of) but I cannot seem to get anything that works and realize I am doing something (possibly everything) wrong.

So if someone out there could give some advice, I would appreciate it very much and thanks a lot for your time.

Our computer specs are as follows:

System Model: Dell Desktop, Optiplex GX270
Operating System: Windows XP Professional 2002, Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
Processor: 2.67 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
- 8 kilobyte primary memory cache
- 512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
Main Circuit Board: Dell Computer Corp. 0U1324
Memory: 254 Megabytes
