If you look at an ipconfig and see that your ip is 169.254.*.*, then you can bet that there is a problem with a the connection, whether it is with the modem or router that isn't as easy, but you can usuall tell by doing power cycles to start and then try removing different pieces of hardware and see what the outcome is.
