They are usually partitioned as two drives.
I seem to remember a great little utility I once had called treesize. It
was just a small program I downloaded but it showed which folders had
the most data in them making your inspector job much easier.
In windows explorer, make sure you go to tools/folder options
click the view tab and select show hidden files and folders.
As a last issue, you dont say which XP you are using but in windows
explorer, under documents-settings then your user name, there is a folder
called local settings. In this is a temp folder which ends up with thousands of
files in it every week on my puter. You can delete everything in this because
they are not really required.
