Hello, I'm having a problem connecting my Windows 2003 Server to any other
machine on my network with a specific NIC.

It's a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC. In this box I also have another NIC, a wireless D-Link RangeBooster N, and it can connect fine. I've also tried switching the Ethernet NIC into a different computer, where it also works fine. So it's not the NIC itself. So that narrows it down to configuration errors. So, next I tried disabling all other adapters, to eliminate conflict with IP addresses, and so forth.

First, I set it to Obtain IP automatically, for both IP and DNS server. Then I plug it directly into my Router, a D-Link DIR 625. The router has DHCP turned on, and the server does not. I haven't even installed DHCP. But I have installed DNS. I've tried the following configurations, all to no avail.

I've tried:

Ethernet to Router, DHCP on Router, Obtain Automatically.
Ethernet to Router, DHCP on Router, Request Static Router as Gateway and DNS
Ethernet to Router, DHCP on Router, Request Static Router as gateway, server as DNS

Ethernet to a IBM 24 port hub, then the hub to the router (this is how I have 15 other workstations set up, and they all get their IP addresses from the router just fine, and have internet. Still wouldn't work for the server.

Next, I tried repeating all 4 of these again, only I put a DHCP reservation for this server in the Routers Web Based Administration settings.

No connection there.

Next I tried switching the ethernet cable to a different one, a known to be working one. No changes. Keep in mind I am also plugging these into the LAN ports, as I should, not the WAN port. I know that's a common mistake, but that's not my issue here.

Basically what's happened, is that if I try to obtain automatically, it will sit there for like 3 minutes, and then finally it will say "Limited / No Conn". I am assigned an AIPIA address from windows, 169.72. something.

Next, if I try to request a static address, 192.168.2.175, Subnet 255.255.255.0 and then the IP of the router 192.168.2.100, it gives it to me, almost instantly. Then my connection says Connected, blah blah mbps. However, though it says I'm connected, I'm not. There's no internet. Additionally, I can't load the router's web based admin. So i tried simply pinging the router, and it times out. I cannot ping any other network computers or clients either.

When I turn on my WiFi adapter, it can connect to the wireless, and then I can see all the other workgroup machines, ping the router, and do the web admin and internet. So what's the catch? Did I miss something?

Does installing DNS make you have to use specific configurations when connecting to the internet with an Local Area Connection vs a Wireless Network Adapter? This puzzled me. It's not the ethernet cord, and it's not the NIC, because like I said earlier, I can put this same NIC into another server, and it works as it should.

Puzzling much? Any help would be appreciated. If this turns out to be a DUH solution I'm gonna hit myself.
