In theory: The Overvolt protection "should" protect the PC.
In reality: that would be dependent on the quality of the PSU.
Low qualtiy PSU's very often take other hardware with them when they fail -Mobo & CPU being the most common.
Quality PSU's just cease to operate when they fail.
