I have a desktop from 2004, and among boot options in the BIOS I have CD, hard drive, removable drive, floppy, USB CD, USB hard drive, USB floppy, and maybe others. Apparently it treats the USB ones differently. So I suspect if you don't have an entry for USB in your BIOS (expected for an older machine), you won't be able to boot from it.
