Reading some of your other post (mainly the "optimized" thread), you may want to look into compiling your own kernel. It's the best place to start if you're wanting to customize a build for your hardware/specific needs. It's also not that hard and doesn't take all that long so you can experiment a bit. I'm sure Ubuntu will allow you to build the kernel as a .deb package too, so you can install it via dpkg just like any other package. Might be worth a look.
