Hi,

There are an infinate amount of things that you can do for tweaks what are you wanting to do, I guess that is really the question.

As for compiling your own kernel there are a lot of steps that go into that. I haven't done that myself so I don't all of them. One thing that I would ask though is do you know how to compile a program from the source code? That would be the first thing to learn. If not then start with google they can help you a lot. Or I can come up with some easy programs that you can try to compile.
