Hi and welcome to the forum

Engine mount holes can always be drilled if they don't match. The bigger problems are the throttle/choke set up. Same with the electrical connections.

Seeing how this a 20+ year old mower I would not be putting a whole lot of money in it.

I can't answer your question as what XL stands for.
