Hmm, actually they are both laptops - I'll have a look around but won't be able to do very much with the HW there.

FWIW, BIOS shows the Internal DVD/CD ROM as 'Installed'.

Is it not likely to be some clever disabling by MS (as DRM punishment for the questionable XP install)?

Typing "c:" at the a: prompt returns 'Invalid Drive Specification' (c: is the hdd).
