What you need to do is start skype from the terminal, type
skype

If the application hangs then it may pront something in the terminal window.
When it freezes do you still have mouse and keyboard access?
If yes, then to terminal skype, press ctrl-alt-esc
the cursor changes toskull and crossbones, click the skype window to kill the app.
You may also find a log in /var/log/messages
You may get better help on ubuntuforums, but post which version of ubuntu you use.
