As for things relating to AOL mail, I've never used it, so I can't tell you if it forwards or not. As for your other question, mac.com cost money, gmail is free, and works great with the Mail.app that comes with OS X. In fact, I use gmail. I know that gmail can fetch email from other email accounts, but I don't know if AOL mail is one of them. It's a feature I don't use, so I've never looked into it.
