Transitioning email from one address to another

Hi, folks. This may not be the right place to post this, but I didn't see a specific link for problems with email. Please let me know if I should post this elsewhere.

I have reached the end of the rope with AOL. The desktop for Mac AOL just bites. So I'd like to transition my email from AOL to either mac.com or gmail.

I would be very interested in hearing any pros or cons about these mail systems.

And I want to know if I can set AOL to automatically bounce all my mail to the one I eventually choose. I've had the same AOL address for, oh, about a century, and I would like old pals to be able to reach me at my new address for at least a year during the transition.

Thanks for any help you can give me.
