The network issue would be obvious from the way your network is set up and if another browser acts in the same way. (Example being IE, which is why i asked about performance of IE?)

I think i'm going to go down undocked windy's route here...
- Press [Winkey]+R or click start-run to open the run dialogue
- Type firefox.exe -safe-mode
- Press run

Then try everything again, if it's still just as slow post back saying so.

p.s. Actually if it's still as slow, please clear your private data (Tools->Options->Privacy->Clear Now) because temporary files can cause this sort of lag (but you'd need to be downloading Gigabytes at a time.
