Model: Samsung SH-S222 (Shows up in Device Manager as: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-222A ATA Device)
Bought this last week on Newegg, didn't come with a CD, but that was fine since drivers installed automatically. My memory is a little sketchy (had way more serious hw issues), but I think I remember this drive working. Anyway the problem is as follows:
When I boot into Vista x64 or Win 7 on one computer, or Vista 32bit on another computer, the device shows up like it should, in My Computer and Device Manager, etc. When I put a CD or DVD in, it would just keep spinning. The green led keeps flashing like its reading the disk, or trying to, but it ultimately fails. Usually what happens is that My Computer freezes. Now the weirder part:
When I put in my Ubuntu (or Vista) installation disk, and try to boot from CD Drive from BIOS, it works. It successfully loads and reads from the disk. Didn't try actually installing from it (will later), but for Ubuntu I could run the "Check Disk Integrity" option, if that means anything for the actual disk drive. From this I guess the hardware works? I dunno
