Right-click on your desktop and pick properties. Under the settings tab, what's the color depth (16 colors? 256 colors? 16-bit or higher? - you want the highest you can get).
If for some reason it doesn't let you set a higher resolution or color depth, the drivers for your video card might be broken. What model and make is your computer? Or what make and model is the graphics card? You could redownload and re-install the drivers to try to fix it.
