Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Randy Starks was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with a felony, aggravated battery on a police officer, after the slow-moving truck he was driving struck an officer who had tried to stop him in South Beach.
Around midnight, Starks' vehicle, described as a black freight-liner, had 13 people inside it, including a woman who was sitting on his lap while he drove along Ocean Drive, according to a police report.
For approximately half a block the officer pursued the truck, which is supposed to seat four. When he reached it he knocked on the driver's side-rear window. But Starks, a five-year veteran who was a part-time starter for the Dolphins last season, allegedly kept driving through bumper-to-bumper traffic on the busy Memorial Day weekend night.
The officer continued to pursue the vehicle and pounded on the same window a second time. That time the vehicle stopped, according to the report. But as the officer approached the driver's door the vehicle accelerated, moving forward and slightly to the left. Because of the vehicle's movement, the officer was struck in the chest, pushed back, and pinned against another vehicle stuck in traffic, prompting Starks' arrest, the arresting officer said.
