If you haven't already try a coolant pressure test, (connected to the rad). I would think Auto Zone would have a kit available for rent cheap. In my opinion white smoke usually indicates burned coolant/water. If this all goes well your crank position sensor I would agree could be your issue. Can Auto Zone or others test your computer?
