For the first problem, I found out that whats happening is my laptop switches to battery power for a split second "While plugged in"". That causes the screen to go dim and performance takes a hit because the laptop tries to save battery power. So it comes down to problem 2. I think if I fix the second problem the first one would be solved as well. any ideas?
