Everything is fine except I cannot use my CDROMs.
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing them. Windows recognizes them as new drives and loads the drivers. However, in the Device Manager the drives have a yellow mark on them and the troubleshooter indicates a Device Manager Error 31 indicating that Windows was unable to load the drivers.
Any suggestions to correct this problem would be greatly appreciated. That is outside of reinstalling Windows.

I was able to correct the problem by copying the original system.alt file (the one I had renamed systemalt.bad before executing the c:\winnt\repair\system command in the Windows Recovery console) to the newly created DEFAULT system file.
I learned that system.alt is AN EXACT COPY of the system file.
When the system32\config\system file is CORRUPTED AND CANNOT BE REPAIRED, just copy the ORIGINAL system32\config\system.alt file (DON'T FORGET THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE RENAMED IT) to the system32\config\system file and your computer will run just as good as it did before you received that old systemced error message.
