Streaming and downloading

Hello!
I'm new to these forums; any kind of help would be appreciated :) My apologies for some bad english.

Currently I'm having alot of difficulties when it comes to streaming and occasionally downloading (bigger files).

The typical outcome is like this:
I start streaming (on youtube for instance), and everything seems allright for a while, all of a sudden it seems like my computer refuses to stream anymore. If it stopped streaming at lets say 01:24, I click on the timeline to start streaming at 01:30, it starts streaming normally again, but after a while it stops again. My roommate have no problem streaming (we share bandwidth).
For watching youtube and alike, it's not that bad, it's just annoying to have to forward/rewind all the time to be able to see it all. But it becomes a huge problem when streaming from a few other places where "searching" around in the unstreamed areas isn't possible.

On to the downloading part, it seems like my computer handles downloads of small sized files (0-10mb), but when I try to download e.g. movies from Filefront, it just stops after a while, just like the streaming. I normally get to download around 30-50mb of the file, then it stops. Re-downloading can change the outcome a little bit (downloading e.g. 5 or 10mb less/more), but I haven't been able to download a large file in months and its starting to piss me off a bit :(

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do, tips on how to improve, or know how to solve this problem?
