Re: new install

Hi Bob

I'll assume that you have broadband Internet (cable, DSL, or satellite), and are connecting using an ethernet cable or a wireless adapter. (If you are using dial-up, I'd suggest calling your Internet provider).

Can I assume that the laptop is old enough to run Windows 98? (Many newer laptops cannot run Windows 98.) If yes, check in Device Manager to make sure that the network adapter is installed (Start-Control Panel-System-Device Manager-Network Adapters). If your network adapter is not listed, you'll need to install Win98 drivers for it.

Also in the Control Panel, look for "Internet Options". In the "Connections" tab, click on "LAN Settings" and then select "Automatically detect".

If you have DSL, you may also wish to have your DSL modem handle the logon/authentication with your provider --- contact them for instructions as how to do so (it varies depending on your ISP and your DSL device).

Best of luck
. . . Gary
