Re: Shells
What exactly did your friend mean by Unix shell? A shell like zsh, bash or tcsh would not directly run on a Windows system. For the shell to run on a Windows system, you would need some emulation/virtualization type of software running. Most other desktop operating systems I know of are Unix-likes, so they not only could run the shell, but would already have one or more shells installed. Windows can use a fake Unix-like environment called Cygwin, but it's kind of a last resort if you're looking for a Unix-like environment. I prefer to either directly run a Unix-like operating system (Mac OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc), or if that is not an option to virtualize one.
