Call your Internet provider, and ask them for instructions on how to setup your DSL "modem" to handle the logon/authentication and PPPOE, if that is what they need. They'll have good answers for you, after all - you are paying them good money for the service.

If you set up the DSL modem to handle to logon/authentication chores, your ethernet adapter should find the Internet without much fuss: just set the Connections tab in IE Options (control panel) to have the LAN "autodetect".

Hopefully they'll have a hardware firewall in place in the DSL modem, too -- that will greatly help your online security.
