Just to bring you all up to date:
A HUGE thank you to everyone who tried to help me on these one (esp. Greyknight and CTSNKY. I ended up calling Dell tech support 5 times, each time they couldn't fix it. In the end I got rather upset and them what I thought about their service and hung up. 20 mins later they phoned back and said they would send an engineer round in a few days. Sure nough, he came. Twice. On the second visit he fixed it. I don't know what was wrong, but he changed the hard disk and memory, then the motherboard and processo chip. Now, it doesn't run slow at all :D
So, once again, a HUGE thank you to everyone who tried to help.
