Many current Linux distro's have Live CD and/or Live DVD's that you can download. Most won't need a HDD unless you want to save files. In many cases, you could probably use a USB Flash drive to save any files, but any user settings (like wallpaper, screen saver, etc) won't be saved between reboots. In addition to Ubuntu, Fedora and OpenSUSE have Live CD/DVD's.
