Actually, I'd be amazed if she was able to do that, since DSL is specifically a 1:1 connection to the telco CO. In addition, a single DSL connection uses all the available bandwidth above the audio band that is reserved for POTS communications.
I don't know what she was smoking that day, but she didn't have two DSL modems on one telephone line.
You can use a dial-up V.90/92 modem and DSL on the same line, perhaps she's just confused.
